“This image has potential because of its use of light, but the text that accompanies the image takes away from what the photographer captured. This is something that I am regularly noticing in these images, the photographer takes away from the image by passing judgement in words. For example, in this image we cannot inherently see that this is a cleaner nor an art museum. The use of light gives a feeling of exhaustion in the person captured, but the establishment of explaining who the person is in the image, and seemingly judgemental statement about their lack of interest in the art, reduces the imagination and expresses details that the photograph does not show by using the medium of the photograph. This is pretty common in these images, whereas children that are documenting their day to day life tend to express something deeper with their writing. An image that stands out documenting a day to day scene to express something deeper happening is the image that shows using a wheat field as a place of study. Another strong image also comes from a more traditional classroom where the photographer shows a traditional shadow puppetry show. In both of these images, the text highlights what the image is actually showing and describes how the imagery reflects something about the photographer's life.”
